Long Description:

This monument contains a lot of family history. When I first saw this one I thought it was stone. This one is all about the Slocum Family and has their family history dating back to the 1600's. This monument is located in Prospect Hill Cemetery in Northville, N.Y. 12134. The hours are 9am to 8pm. No Dogs Allowed. Happy WMin', Swizzle & Family

GILES2 SLOCUM,SON OF ANTHONY, WAS BORN IN SOMERSETSHIRE, ENGLAND. HE MARRIED JOAN --, AND WAS ONE OF THE EARLIEST SETTLERS, IN 1638 OR BEFORE, OF PORTSMOUTH, RHODE ISLAND. THEY THERE DIED, SHE 31ST OF THE 6TH MO., 1679, HE IN THE YEAR 1682, POSSESSED OF LARGE TRACTS OF LAND THERE, IN NEW PLYMOUTH, AND IN NEW JERSEY. THEY HAD NINE CHILDREN: 1.JOHANNA. 2.JOHN. 3.GILES. 4.EBENEZER. 5.NATHANIEL. 6.PELEG. 7.SAMUEL. 8.MARY. 9.ELEAZER.

JOHN 5 SLOCUM, SON OF ELEAZER, BORN 4 AUGUST, 1717; MARRIED DEBORAH ALMY, THEY WERE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. RESIDED IN DARTMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS. A YEOMAN AND MERCHANT, THEY HAD 12 CHILDREN: 1.JOB. 2.ELIZABETH. 3.ELEAZER. 4.JOHN. 5.FITZGERALD. 6.PARDON. 7.ELSIE 8.EBENEZER. 9.ELEPHEL. 10.JONAH. 11.DEBORAH 12.RESTCOME.

CALEB WRIGHT 8 SLOCUM, SON OF JOSEPH, WAS BORN ON THIS FARM 22 OCTOBER, 1797, HE HERE MARRIED, 26 NOVEMBER, 1818, ELIZABETH BASS, BORN HERE 25 NOVEMBER, 1798, DAUGHTER OF JEREMIAH BASS AND HIS WIFE, ELIZABETH BENTLEY. CALEB W. SLOCUM WAS THE PIONEER CARDER AND CLOTH DRESSER BY THIS CREEK FOR 25 YEARS, CAPTAIN OF THE MILITARY, MAGISTRATE, AND LATER A FARMER, CATTLE-RAISER, MERCHANT, AND TANNER. AFTER PARTICULARLY BUSY, SUCCESSFUL AND HONORABLE LIVES, THEY DIED AT NORTHVILLE, HE 14 JULY, 1864; SHE 26 JULY, 1866.

SLOCUM HON. ANTHONY SLOCOMBE, FROM TAUNTON, ENGLAND, WAS RECORDED BY THE CLERK AS ANTHONY SLOCUM, AMONG THE FIRST PURCHASERS OF COHANNET, NEW PLYMOUTH, NOW TAUTAN, MASSACHUSETTS, IN THE YEAR 1637. HE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF THAT PIONEER SETTLEMENT, AND MEMBER OF THE FIRST COMPANY TO DEVELOP THE IRON INDUSTRY IN AMERICA, UNTIL 1662. FROM 1670 HE WAS RECORDED AS A LORD DEPUTY PROPIETOR OF CAROLINA, AND RESIDENT AT EDENTON IN THE ALBEMARLE COUNTRY. HE THERE DIED IN JANUARY, 1690, AT THE AGE OF NEAR 100 YEARS. CHILDREN: 1. ELEAZER3 SLOCOM, SON OF GILES, BORN 25TH OF THE 10TH MO., 1664, IN PORTSMOUTH, R.I. MARRIED ELEPHEL FITZGERALD. THEY WERE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS, AMONG THE FIRST IN AMERICA; ALSO AMONG THE EARLY SETTLERS AND LARGE PROPRIETORS OF DARTMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS. THEY THERE DIED, HE IN JULY, 1727, SHE IN OCTOBER, 1748. THEY HAD SEVEN CHILDREN: 1.MERIBAH. 2.MARY. 3.ELEAZER. 4.JOHN. 5.BENJAMIN. 6.JOANNA. 7.EBENEZER.

ELEAZER4 SLOCUM, SON OF ELEAZER, BORN 20 JANUARY, 1694; MARRIED DEBORAH SMITH. THEY WERE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. RESIDED IN DARTSMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, A YEOMAN AND MERCHANT AND THERE DIED, HE IN JANUARY, 1739. THEY HAD EIGHT CHILDREN: 1.JOHN. 2.DAVID. 3.MARY. 4.ELEAZER. 5.ELEPHEL. 6.HUMPHREY. 7.ANN. 8.DEBORAH.

ELEAZER6 SLOCUM, SON OF JOHN, BORN 15 MAY, 1744, IN DARTSMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS; MARRIED THERE ANSTAGE VIALL 14 MARCH, 1765. THEY WERE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. MOVED TO WASHINGTON COUNTY, NEW YORK, WHERE HE ENLISTED AS A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. AFTER THE CLOSE OF THE WAR THEY SETTLED WITHIN SIGHT OF THIS PLACE AS PIONEERS, AND HERE HE DIED IN DECEMBER, 1826. SHE DIED IN OTISCO, N.Y., IN AUGUST,1829. THEY HAD TEN CHILDREN: 1.JOSEPH. 2.FORTUNATUS. 3.SARAH. 4.FITZGERALD.5.JOHN. 6.DEBORAH. 7.ELEAZER. 8.ELIAS. 9.MARY. 10.ELIZABETH.

JOSEPH7 SLOCUM, SON OF ELEAZER, WAS BORN 6 FEBRUARY, 1766, IN DARTMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, AND WAS REARED A MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF FRIENDS. HE CAME WITH HIS PARENTS TO WASHINGTON COUNTY, NEW YORK, AND THERE ENLISTED AS A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND SERVED IN THE 13TH REGIMENT. THIS WAS THE ONLY INSTANCE IN THE FAMILY OF A "QUAKER" FATHER AND SON ENLISTING FOR WAR. HE MARRIED, IN 1790. ELIZABETH WRIGHT, IN CAMBRIDGE, N.Y.., DAUGHTER OF CALEB, ALSO A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER. HE BOUGHT A FARM EMBRACING THE GROUND OF THIS CEMETERY AND SETTLED HERE IN 1792. HE WAS PETITIONER, AND BONDSMAN, TO THE STATE FOR GUNS TO PROTECT THE EARLY SETTLERS HERE AGAINST SAVAGE ABORIGINES. HE PROMOTED BY THIS CREEK THE FIRST FLOURING MILL IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY. THEY HERE DIED; HE 8 OCTOBER, 1815, SHE 6 JULY, 1838. THEY HAD TEN CHILDREN: 1.ELIZABETH. 2.REUBEN. 3.RACHEL. 4.CALEB. 5.AZUBAH. 6.SARA. 7.HUMPHREY. 8.ANNIS. 9.ELIAS. 10.JOSEPH.

CALEB WRIGHT SLOCUM AND HIS WIFE ELIZABETH BASS, WITH HIS PARENTS, GRANDFATHER, SISTER SARA, BORN 5 AUGUST, 1803, DIED 3 MAY, 1817, BROTHER, ELIAS, BORN 9 NOVEMBER, 1811, DIED 13 DECEMBER, 1828, WERE FIRST BURIED IN THE RIDGE ROAD CEMETERY ONE MILE SOUTH OF THIS MONUMENT, TOGETHER WITH CALEB'S CHILDREN WHO DIED NEAR HERE. THEIR REMAINS WERE MOVED AND LAID IN THIS LOT 1 SEPTEMBER, 1898, BY HIS SON CHARLES ELIHU SLOCUM

JOHN RILEY, 28 SEPTEMBER, 1843; BURIED HERE. 3.SARA, BORN 4 JULY, 1824, DIED 27 OCTOBER 1870, GRAND RAPIDS, MICH, UNMARRIED. 4.ANNIS, BORN 1 AUGUST, 1826, DIED 11 MARCH, 1846, BURIED HERE. 5.CLARISSA, BORN 11 MARCH, 1828, MARRIED, MARRIED EPHRAIM H.
